Every user in the system can be assigned a 'role' or a series of 'roles' which bundles together the permissions and capabilities for that user.
In addition to controlling what users can and cannot do in the system, these roles also shape what users can and cannot see. This, in turn, changes the way the user interface appears. For example, users with the 'Basic User' role experience a more 'slimmed down' version of the interface which does not include the left-hand menu seen by people with the 'Supervisor' or 'Owner' roles.
